Battle for semi-final spots intensifies

With Negombo CC and Colts CC breathing down their neck, Group A table leaders Sebastianites find themselves in a must win situation when they meet Moors SC at Moors grounds in one of the eight matches of the SLC Major Club Limited Overs tournament down for decision today.

Sebastianites (10 points) who have played one match more than Negombo CC and Colts hold onto a slender one point lead and have three matches left in the league stage, all of which are important to them if they hope to qualify for a place in the semi-finals. Sebastianites are in a position where they cannot drop a single game, whereas Negombo CC and Colts have some breathing space with each of them having four matches to play.

Today, Colts host Police SC who are second from the bottom of Group A at Colts grounds, while Negombo CC travel to the Welagedara Stadium to meet Kurunegala YCC who are at the bottom of the table without a single win. On current form both Colts and Negombo CC should win their respective matches.

Group B leaders SSC despite their loss to Bloomfield still hold onto a two-point lead over Chilaw Marians CC and Bloomfield with all three clubs having played seven matches each. SSC host eighth placed Panadura SC at SSC grounds, while Chilaw Marians CC are the guests of Army SC at Army grounds Dombagoda. Wins for both SSC and Chilaw Marians CC will help consolidate their positions as one-two in the absence of Bloomfield who don’t have a fixture today. 

Nugegoda SWC meanwhile are also within reach of finishing in the top two of the group. They have the advantage of playing one game less than the top three teams and trail SSC by only three points. Nugegoda SWC will take on Badureliya SC at De Soysa Stadium, Moratuwa. The other match down for decision today is between CCC and Air Force SC at Bloomfield grounds. – (ST)
