Bloomfield took a giant stride towards grabbing full points from Badureliya SC and qualifying for the final of the SLC Major Club 3-day tournament yesterday.

On a rain affected opening day at Bloomfield grounds, the hosts did extremely well to bowl out Badureliya SC for 87 and reply with 58-1 before the rain and bad light prevented any play for the rest of the day.

Badureliya SC’s decision to bat first after winning the toss backfired on them when seamers Lahiru Madushanka (4/38) and Isitha Wijesundara (3/8) ran through their batting taking seven wickets. Off-spinner Ravindu Fernando chipped in with the remaining three wickets as Badureliya SC were put out within a matter of under 20 overs. In Bloomfield’s reply Ron Chandraguptha was unbeaten on 28 when bad light ended play. Colts, the other team from Group A in the running for a place in the final took four Chilaw Marians CC wickets for 123 runs after inviting them to bat first at Colts grounds when first rain and then bad light put a stop to play. Openers Vishwa Chaturanga (34) and Kasun Vidura (49) gave them a solid start with 65 for the first wicket before spinners Akila Dananjaya and Dunith Wellalage broke through to capture four wickets between them.

In the fight to avoid relegation Negombo CC made a good start to their innings posting 78-1 against Ragama CC at Surrey Village, Maggona. Kaveen Fernando (33*) and Pasindu Lakshanka (41 off 47 balls) put on an opening partnership of 78 before rain stopped play.

In the match at Police grounds, Panadura SC invited to bat first by Ace Capital CC progressed to 182-4 by stumps. Test opener Oshada Fernando (42) and Captain Irosh Samarasooriya (37) posted 77 for the first wicket before being dismissed. But Raminda Wijesooriya (57* off 96 balls, 5 fours) added a further 80 for the fourth wicket with Rumesh Buddika (31) to ensure Panadura SC made good, their start to the innings. Spinners Wanuja Sahan and Rohan Jayatissa took two wickets apiece.
