By Shamseer Jaleel
CR & FC reclaimed their number two position with a 31/22 win over Army SC at Welisara yesterday.
At the short breather CR led 22/5.

Meanwhile for the Solders their tries were scored by Isuru Medagedera, Ashan Bandara, Lahiru Ratnayake and Sudaraka Dikkumbura scored their tries with Sachin Gamage adding the extras on one of the try conversions.
Kandy sinks Sailors at Welisara
Kandy Sports Club lived up to their high standard of rugby no matter played in Kandy or Colombo when they continued their unbeaten run in the league when they went past Navy SC 39/28 at Welisara.
At the short breather winners led 19/13.
Kandy will now play all their remaining matches at Nittawela in front of their packed stadium with CR & FC, Havies and Cops to come their way. Soon after the two Super Round encounters that too will be played at Nittawela. Their number one position in the league will give them a home advantage.
Isuru Congahawatte who had a grand outing for the Sailors came close to scoring a drop goal and penalty when the ball hit the upright which was on target sooner than later in the fifth minute of the game with a penalty kick.
Isuru who was in sparkling form scored Navy SC’s first try and converted to take an early 10 to nothing lead. But Kandy hit back soon after through 7s sensation Srinarth Sooriiyabandara. Tharinda Ratwatte added the extra two points.
Another try by Jason Dissanayake for Kandy SC took Kandy ahead with two points. Navy took the lead through Congahawatte’s penalty but Kandy hit back through Buddhima Pyaratne’s try and Tharinda Ratwatte’s conversion to take the lead for the first time in the game 19/13.
It is very tough to keep the National 7s skipper Danushka Dyan when he put a super solo of 60 m dash to score. Ratwatte as usual continued his high standards in kicking to take Kandy further to 26/13. Another penalty for each side took them to 29/16.
Radeesha Seneviratne’s try and Isuru’s conversion took Navy closer to the lead at 23/29. Ratwatte’s penalty and Diluksha Dange’s try took Kandy further ahead at 32/23. Even when Kandy were short of two men, they scored their last try through Sooriyabandara. Navy had time for one more try through Charith Silva but they ran out of time as in the first leg played in Nittawela.
Police win but lose out on number 2
Police Sports Club could not reclaim their number two position in the Inter club league rugby encounter when they handed off a lowly placed Air Force outfit 29/12 at Police Park.
At the short breather Cops led 29 to nothing.
Police played some cohesive rugby in the initial half defended most part of the later half they were caught with some repeated attacks by the gutsy Air Force outfit who ran out of steam later in the game.
Police scored their tries from Kasun Rajakauran, Nisal Samadhi, Shan Akila and Udaya Sanjula with Yohan Peiris doing the kicking duties for the Cops. Meanwhile Air Force scored their tries through Thimira Ananda and Shashika Fernando with Gayantha Iddamalgoda doing the kicking.
Havies edge out CH
Havelock Sports Club edged out CH & FC 40/37 making a bold comeback in the later half.
At the short breather Park Club led 20/17.
Havelock scored their tries through skipper Mithun Hapugoda (two), Dinusha Ariyapala and Shawkhet Lahir with Sandesh Jayawickrema and Santhush Algama doing the kicking duties. Meanwhile CH & FC scored their tries through Prasad Madushanka (two), Mohamed Absal, Rohitha Rajapaksa, Warren Weerakoon and Niwanka Prasad while Hirusha Sampath did the kicking duties for the CH.
Though a win here will not help the Park Cub as Police too won at last weekend’s game. The Park Club will be placed at number four behind Kandy SC, Police SC and CR & FC.
