Cabinet approves Rs. 106 m worth rewards to Paralympic medallists

The winning medallists and the rest of Sri Lanka contingent for 2020 Paralympic Games in Japan returned to the country last evening and were extended a warm welcome at the Bandaranaike International Airport

 


The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday decided to grant rewards estimated to be worth Rs. 106 million to the Sri Lankan medallists at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Japan. 

Dinesh Priyantha Herath won a gold medal with a new world record in the Men’s Javelin Throw Event in F46 category at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and also Samitha Dulan Kodithuwakku also won a bronze medal in the Men’s Javelin Throw Event in the F64 category. The National Sports Council, established in accordance with the provisions of the Sports Act No. 25 of 1973, has recommended the criteria for awarding cash prizes and the amount of the prize money that award for the recognised international sports achievements. 

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal tabled by Sports and Youth Minister Namal Rajapaksa to award cash prizes to the two athletes and their two coaches who have attained the above achievements, as recommended by the National Sports Council.
