Former Sri Lanka cricketer Dilruwan Perera played a captain’s knock of 124 off 114 balls (15 fours, 6 sixes) at the age of 41 to rescue BRC from a dreadful start against CCC at BRC grounds on the opening day of the Major League inter-club 3-day tournament which resumed yesterday.
BRC choosing to bat first slumped to 89-7 before Perera, batting with the tail, ramped them to 207. Left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva caused the BRC collapse finishing with 5/44. CCC also began badly losing four wickets for 18, but finished the day promisingly placed at 175-5 thanks to a 107-run stand between Sonal Dinusha (44) and skipper Ashan Priyanjan (91* off 89 balls, 12 fours, 4 sixes).
Former left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara took 5/62 at Police Park to dismiss Chilaw Marians CC for 175 of which 86 (8 fours, 1 six) runs came off the bat of Ravin Yasas. By stumps Police SC had replied with 112-3 with Heshan Danushka 68* off 88 balls (8 fours).
Seamer Eshan Malinga (4/33) and left-arm spinner Shashika Dulshan (4/45) combined to bowl out Negombo CC for 172 for whom Umesh Lakshan top scored with 74 (9 fours, 1 six) at BOI Katunayake. Ragama CC replied with 112-3 with national player Nishan Madushka scoring 57. Left-arm seamer Adeesha Thilanchana took his maiden five-fer (5/22) as Tamil Union were dismissed for 158 at the P Sara Oval. The home team were at one stage 56-8, but Shiran Fernando with a maiden first-class fifty (57 off 88 balls, 8 fours, 2 sixes) and Dilum Sudeera (32*) figured in a 102-run stand to save Tamil Union the blushes. Bloomfield replied with 124-4 with Kasun Abeyratne unbeaten on 72 (10 fours).
Spinners Akila Dananjaya (4/60) and Malka Madusanka (3/36) helped Group A table leaders Colts terminate Galle CC for 242 at Galle. Colts were 25-1 at the close trailing by 217.Group B leaders Ace Capital CC were on course for an early win when they shot out Sebastianites for 56 at Dombagoda. Off-spinner Roshan Jayatissa was the chief destroyer with figures of 6/9. Ace Capital CC scored 175 in their first innings and 22-2 in their second innings, an overall lead of 141. Badureliya CC were 14 runs away from gaining a first innings lead against Air Force SC at Katunayake. Spinners Parvez Rasool (5/75) and Chanaka Komasaru (4/50) helped put out Air Force SC for 164 (Movin Subasingha 61). Badureliya CC were 151-7 with Rasool unbeaten on 68 off 56 balls (11 fours) and left-arm spinner Malith de Silva capturing 5/30.
Opener Dilhara Polgampola missed out on a maiden first-class century by seven runs (93 off 238 balls, 9 fours) as Kurunegala YCC ended the day on 232-7 against NCC at NCC grounds. All the matches will continue on the second day today. – (ST)
