One of Sri Lanka’s oldest corporate golf tourneys, the annual ‘Shakespeare Shield’ sponsored by Carson Cumberbatch PLC, will tee off its 108th edition this weekend at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).
This prestigious tourney is an annual board event at the RCGC, and is the only competition open to members and teams from registered companies, diplomatic institutions, government agencies, police and the armed forces of Sri Lanka. It is a one-day stableford event, making it more exciting and narrowing the margin for error.
Last year, Shamal Perera and Ranshan Gomez of Access Group took home the honours when they edged out SriLankan Airlines. Up to 19 teams participated in the 2018 edition of Shakespeare Shield, which allows men and women to partner as teams.
The Shakespeare Shield Golf Tournament is named after W. Shakespeare, a former Chairman of Carson Cumberbatch PLC, who was elected to the RCGC Committee in 1908. It was he who initiated the first ‘Foursomes Competition’ exclusively for private companies, banks and state institutions. The tournament was initiated in his honour in 1911 and has been on the annual calendar since. Carson Cumberbatch PLC continues its commitment towards golf and its rich history with the RCGC, upholding the former Chairman’s tradition of promoting inter-corporate goodwill through sports.
