Chamara Silva appointed as Sri Lanka Under-19 Head Coach

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has appointed former Sri Lanka cricketer Chamara Silva as the Head Coach of the Sri Lanka Under-19 National team.

Silva is an ICC Level III Qualified Coach with extensive coaching experience in Sri Lanka’s first-class cricket.

Before joining SLC, he served as the Head Coach of Police Sports Club and previously coached Bloomfield Cricket Club and Panadura Sports Club.

As a player, 45-year-old Silva represented Sri Lanka in 75 ODIs, 11 Tests and 16 T20Is, amassing 2,269 international runs, including one Test century against New Zealand at Wellington in 2006 and one ODI century against India at Visakhapatnam in 2007.

His bow-legged stance and flamboyant cover drives immediately attracted comparisons with the great Aravinda de Silva, but despite being prodigiously talented Silva failed to nail down a regular place in the national team.

His appointment is effective from 1 March to 31 December, 2026.

Silva will be responsible for preparing the Sri Lanka Under-19 team for the ICC Under-19 World Cup in 2026 in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

Sri Lanka’s not had a permanent Head Coach for its Under-19 team since Jehan Mubarak’s contract ceased after the 2024 Under-19 World Cup in South Africa. In Sri Lanka’s Under-19 tour of England that followed in June, SLC appointed its High Performance Centre Manager Ruwan Kalpage to oversee the role of Head Coach.
