National and Chilaw Marians CC captain Chamari Atapattu’s all-round brilliance was too much for Seenigama CC who went down by 22 runs in a close contest in a SLC Women’s Division I tournament match played at FTZ grounds Katunayake yesterday.

Chamari slammed five sixes and 13 fours in her 72-ball innings of 108 and followed it up with figures of 3 for 38 to bowl out Seenigama CC for 247. Chamari and Janad Ali figured in a second wicket partnership of 160 of which Janad’s contribution was only 39 off 65 balls.

Once the partnership was broken Chilaw Marians suffered a middle order collapse losing six wickets for eight runs to be 179 for 7 but no. 9 batter Sanduni Nisansala scored an unbeaten 48 off 62 balls to ensure Marians ended with a competitive total of 269 for 8. Seenigama CC bowlers were guilty of sending down 30 wides (which constitutes an extra five overs) out of a total 37 extras conceded. In Seenigama CC’s run chase, opener Vishmi kept her team in the hunt with a stroke-filled 112 off 117 balls (13 fours, 2 sixes) but from 199 for 3, Chilaw Marians managed to crawl back into the game by taking the remaining seven wickets for 48 runs.

Sri Lanka women’s cricketer and skipper of Army SC A Nilakshi de Silva hit a sparkling 76 off 58 balls to help her team recover from 82 for 5 to 172 for 6 and beat Colts CC by 101 runs.

Prasadani Weerakkody the Lankan Women’s wicket-keeper came to Navy SC’s rescue scoring a match-winning unbeaten half-century to guide them to a three wicket-win over Air Force SC A. Having restricted Air Force A to a total of 126-9, Navy’s top order was rattled by Sri Lanka bowlers Ama Kanchana and Chamari Polgampola as they slumped to 59-5. But Prasadani and Sri Lanka women all-rounder Shashikala Siriwardena (22) took the score to 103 from which point Navy managed to score the remaining runs with Prasadani remaining unbeaten on 58 off 79 balls to see her team home.

Shakila Premaratne took 4 for 20 with her off-breaks and Ruchi Samarasinghe scored a half-century off 80 balls to steer Air Force SC B to a three-wicket win over Army SC B. (ST)
