Sri Lanka Women’s team captain Chamari Athapaththu was the top run getter with 313 runs (avg. 52.16) in Dubai
Sri Lanka Women’s cricket team captain Chamari Athapaththu scored a scintillating half-century to push her team into the final of the Fairbreak Invitational Women’s T20 Tournament in Dubai, but her failure to translate that performance in the final saw Falcons lose to Tornadoes by eight wickets and end as runner-up.
Chamari’s knock of 63 off 52 balls (seven fours, two sixes) saw Falcons run up a challenging total of 172-5 in the first semi-final against Spirit riding on an opening stand of 132 off 15 overs between Chamari and England’s Danni Wyatt (83 off 48 balls). Spirit was restricted to a score of 147-5 to give Falcons victory by 25 runs. Chamari with her off-breaks picked up a wicket for 31 runs.
However, in the crucial final against Tornadoes, Falcons invited to bat first managed a total of 151-4 with Chamari contributing nine off 10 balls. Tornadoes put up a strong batting performance to pass that score with five balls to spare and win by eight wickets.
Chamari finished as the leading run-getter of the tournament with 313 runs (avg. 52.16) with one century and one 50 and a strike rate of 139.11. Barmy Army West Indian Deandra Dottin was the second highest run scorer with 289 runs.
Another Sri Lankan Women cricketer left-arm seamer Udeshika Prabodhani had a rather disappointing tournament picking up just two wickets in five matches at an average of 69 for Warriors who finished at the bottom of the standings with one win from five matches. – (ST)
