Champions Trophy – Sri Lanka could make big impact

Head Coach Sanath Jayasuriya was of the view that the level of cricket the team displayed against Australia, Sri Lanka could easily make a big impact in the ICC Champions Trophy.

Regrettably for everyone Sri Lanka is not there. They failed to qualify for the tournament due to the poor brand of cricket they displayed in the ICC 2023 Cricket World Cup in India where they finished ninth out of 10 teams. Only the top eight teams in the standings qualified for the Champions Trophy.

“Unfortunately what happened previously I can’t say anything but if they were there it would have been different. With the confidence they have at present we can do well,” said Jayasuriya.

Since that disastrous 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign Sri Lanka has come a long way as an ODI side ending 2024 on high with four of their cricketers being selected in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year 2024 captained by Sri Lanka’s white ball skipper Charith Asalanka and including Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga. Sri Lanka has also improved in their ODI rankings rising from 8th to 5th as a result of winning 12 out of 18 matches played for the year (losing 3, tied 1). They have started 2025 on a high defeating Australia 2-0 and hope to go from strength to strength during the course of the year.
