Sri Lanka represented by veteran amateur Chanaka Perera and fifteen-year-old Reshan Algama both failed to make the cut at the 122nd Amateur Golf Championship of India, which took place at Royal Calcutta Golf Club recently.
The tournament saw national teams represented from South Africa, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
Reshan was the youngest participant in the tournament at the age of 15 years. Algama found the two days to be challenging, did not make the cut and ended up at the second half of the leaderboard. In addition, the journey for Chanaka Perera, another Sri Lankan amateur, proved to be challenging, and he too did not make the cut for the subsequent rounds as well. However, the experience gained in this highly competitive environment will undoubtedly serve as a valuable lesson. Chanaka ended 65th overall while Reshan ranked 71st in the 90 golfers event.
Among the notable participants advancing to the last 16 were the two South African champions, 23-year-old Altin Van Der Merwe and 27-year-old Jordan Burnand. Their inclusion in the final stages of the tournament promises an exciting clash of skills and strategies. Adding to the intrigue of the competition, South Asian Gold Medalist Subash Tamang (Nepal) secured his spot in the last 16. The tough course saw the first 3 days only one player, Shat Mishra from India managed to get an under par score. The final will take place on 17 December. (SJ)
