The Inter-Provincial Under-19 cricket encounters commenced yesterday at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium and the Asgiriya International Stadium.

Each day, there will be two warm-up matches played: one in the morning hours and the other one in the afternoon. Both encounters will be T20 for the first four days. Thereafter, each of the five teams will battle it out in the 50-over encounters. The warm-up matches will end on 1 August, where the national selectors will bring the squad from 75 players to 30.
The Sri Lanka Under-19 outfit is expected to play in the Asia Cup which will be staged in UAE later this year while the International Cricket Council (ICC) Youth World Cup will take place in West Indies during February 2022. Mahela Jayawardena, who will be the consultant for the outfit, will join the team with effect from October 2022 after his Mumbai Indians contract concludes.
Former national cricketers, Roy Dias, Sachith Pathirana and Chamila Gamage are part of the coaching unit for the selected outfits.
