The CodeGen Athletics team did admirably well at their debut performance at the 37th Mercantile Annual Athletics Championships, which got underway at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo, recently.
The event, deemed the largest sporting event in the mercantile sector, was organised by the Mercantile Athletics Federation and held eight age categories (Novices, Championship, 30+, 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+) for both men and women.
The athletics team comprised 14 members including: Monica Fernando, Seneli Amarasekara, Heshan Rajapaksha, Faizan Muthaliff, Budmal Abisheka, Ashan Lakshitha, Mahinda Kularathne, Nisal Bulathsinghala, Amodh Chandradasa, Nisal Dinuka, Agni Amarathunga, Lakshan Fernando, Avinash Rohith and Surendra Perera.
The team’s determination and dedication culminated in the following medal tally:
Women’s events:
(35+): Monica Fernando won a gold medal in the 100m and two silver medals in the 200m and long jump events.
(30+): Seneli Amarasekara won a gold medal in the 800m race walk event.
Men’s events:
Novices: Heshan Rajapaksha won gold medals for the 5000m and the 1500m event. Faizan Muthaliff won gold medals in the 110m hurdles as well as the 400m hurdles event. Further, the team competed in the 4 x 100m relay with Heshan Rajapaksha, Faizan Muthaliff, Budmal Abisheka, Ashan Lakshitha winning a Bronze Medal in the event.
(40+) Mahinda Kularathne won a silver medal in the 1500m event.
