Sri Lanka will once again host the third leg of the Asian Sevens series on 28 and 29 September at the Racecourse rugby grounds.
This is the fifth year in tandem that Sri Lanka Rugby will host this mega Asian event in Sri Lanka. Korea (Incheon) and China (Huizhou) will host the other two legs of the Asia Sevens Series 2019. Hong Kong has pulled out of the hosting due to their domestic competitions.
Meanwhile Sri Lankan rugby outfit will return to the fifteens circuit after Sri Lanka Rugby authorities successful negotiations with the Asia Rugby to play in Division 1 after opting out for sevens rugby in 2018. Sri Lanka, Singapore, Taipei and Philippines will lock horns in the 4 day tournament at the Taipei Municipal Stadium during May/June 2019.
Sri Lanka Under19 outfit who were demoted to Division 1 after their disaster in Taipei during December 2018 will play alongside Thailand, Philippines and China and the venue is yet to be finalized by Asia Rugby but there is high possibility for Sri Lanka to host this event in December. Sevens at Under 19 level will be played during the month of August (24 and 25) with both Men’s and Women’s event taking place with the venue is yet to be finalised. XXXII Olympiad Tokyo 2020 qualification tournament will take place in Korea while the women’s qualifications event will be worked off in China.
