Colts, Agama CC grab first innings points on day one

Colts and Agama CC have already grabbed first innings points on the opening day of the Major Club Under-23 tournament matches which began yesterday.

Colts new ball bowlers Chimed Wattage (4/20) and Hashanah Wickramasinghe (5/30) routed Chilaw Marians CC for 57, to place their team in a winning position.

In Colts’ reply of 235, skipper Avishka Perera scored an exhilarating 82 off 68 balls (10 fours, 1 six) and Ravindu Rashantha (78 off 99 balls, 11 fours) putting together a stand of 135 for the second wicket. Trailing by 178 runs, Chilaw Marians were 28 without loss at stumps in their second innings.

Former Thomian left-arm spinner Dellon Peiris who has the name of Brian Lara against his initials (D.S.M.B.L. Peiris) wrecked the Kandy Customs CC batting for 151 with figures of 6/62. By the close Ragama CC had replied with 167-3.

In the other matches captains played the lead role with Vinuka Rubasinghe scoring 118 off 133 balls (11 fours, 1 six) in NCC’s total of 220 against Air Force SC who were 123-3 in reply. Ace Capital CC captain Sakuna Liyanage was the mainstay of their total of 372-7 ending the day unbeaten on 159 scored off 207 balls (17 fours, 1 six) against Galle CC.

Army SC captain Shehan Fernando scored 103 off 154 balls (11 fours) and figured in 149-run stand for sixth wicket with Manushka Samith (67) to lift Army from 38-5 to 207. Fast bowler Kalana Perera captured the first five wickets to end with figures of 5/42. By the close SSC had batted themselves into a position of strength making 189-1 with fifties from Sadisha Rajapaksa, Akram Muthalib and Shevon Daniel.

A century from opening bat and wicket-keeper Anjala Bandara (112 off 229 balls, 13 fours) saw CCC end the day strongly placed at 305-5 against Badureliya CC. All the matches will continue on its second day today. – (ST)
