Bringing glory and honour to his motherland, and putting Sri Lanka on the global powerlifting map, champion powerlifter Darin Weerasinghe was recently crowned Champion at the World Masters Powerlifting Championship held in Sun City, South Africa. Darin is the first Sri Lanka to achieve this phenomenal feat, after competing in the competition that saw the participation of over 800 male and female athletes from 47 countries.
Darin took part in the 120 kg Equipped M1 Category which saw lifters from Syria, UK, South Africa and France to name a few. His lifts comprised of a 260 kg Squat, 187.5 kg Bench Press and 272.5 kg Deadlift which edged him with a lead of 2.5 kg total to win the overall Gold medal and become the first Sri Lankan World Champion in Powerlifting. He also secured a Gold medal in the Squat and Deadlift, and Silver in the Bench Press.
A talented motor racer, Darin is a seven-time Sri Lanka National Powerlifting Champion, Asian Bench Press Champion, and Commonwealth Champion as well.
With this victory, Darin secures his place in the World Games 2025.
