David Pieris athletes excel in Singapore

Competing against over 1,200 athletes from 22 countries at the ‘SMTFA International Masters Track and Field Championships 2024’ held recently in Singapore the David Pieris Group (DPG) team brought home 24 medals, including 12 Gold, 9 Silver and 3 Bronze.

The DPG team, comprising eight athletes, were part of a 32-member Sri Lankan contingent that qualified for this prestigious event based on their performances at the Mercantile Athletic Meet 2023.

Among the medal winners of the David Pieris Group team were; Gayesha Dissanayake (4 Gold medals - Hammer Throw, Triple Jump, 100x4, 400x4, 1 Silver medal - Long Jump), Gayani Wasana (4 Gold medals - 100M, 400M Hurdles, 100x4, 400x4), Sisuru Fernando (3 Gold medals - High Jump, Long Jump, 400M Hurdles), Mihirani Perera (3 Gold medals - Long Jump, 400M Hurdles, 100x4, 1 Silver medal - Hammer Throw), Kalpani Fernando (1 Gold medal - 400x4, 1 Silver medal - Triple Jump, 1 Bronze medal - High Jump), Damith Madushan (1 Gold medal - 800M, 1 Silver medal - 1500M), Kasun Shyamal (3 Silver medals - 400M Hurdles, 100x4, 400x4), Malshi Fernando (2 Silver medals - 100M, 200M).

Waruna Udawatte also from DPG represented the Mercantile Athletic Federation as the Team Manager and also won 2 Silver medals (4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay) and 2 Bronze medals (110m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles).

Emphasising its commitment to sports advocacy, the David Pieris Group continues to support and actively encourages employees’ participation in sports initiatives within the mercantile sector. As such, teams from the Group actively participate in various sports tournaments related to mercantile cricket, athletics, volleyball, hockey, basketball, netball, swimming, and badminton.
