Davis Cup, the virtual men’s annual world cup of the sport of tennis, will begin at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Clay Courts at Green Path, Colombo on 8 August.
This Asia-Oceania Zone Group IV Event “A” will be held from 8 to 13 August with the presence of Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Maldives, Yemen and hosts Sri Lanka.
There will be two groups – one of four teams and one of three teams – with the nation finishing top of each group to play off for promotion to Asia-Oceania Group III next year. Three countries Macau, Oman and Qatar have withdrawn from the event.
The Davis Cup, which is considered the biggest annual international team competition in the world, in any sport at the moment, usually consists of four groups, where each nation has to get promotion from one group to the one above to qualify for the World Group I tier where the final battle for the prestigious Davis Cup triumph takes place every year.
