Sri Lanka beat Iraq 2/0 in the Asia Oceania Zone Group IV Event A’ Tennis Tournament for promotion to Group III which took place at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Clay Courts in in Colombo over the weekend.
Sri Lanka will now be joined by the winning team to qualify from the Asia Oceania Zone Group IV Event ‘B’ Tennis Tournament which is scheduled to held in Bahrain later in October this year. Bhutan, Cambodia, Guam, Kuwait, Mongolia, Singapore, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and host Bahrain will contest in this tournament.
Sri Lanka remained unbeaten in Group A while Iraq came in to the finals remaining unbeaten in Group B. Macau, Oman and Qatar withdrew from the tournament. The hosts, Sri Lanka handed off both Bangladesh and Kyrgyzstan 3/0 while Iraq beat Brunei, Maldives, and Yemen on their way to the final encounter
The Sri Lankan outfit comprising of players such as Yasitha de Silva, Harshana Godmanna, Thehan Wijemanne and Chathurya Nilaweera had a great tournament not dropping down in even one game.
Harshana Godamanna who did yeoman service for Sri Lankan Tennis announced his retirement after this event. He is based in USA at present.
