Defending champions Chilaw Marians CC pulled off another nerve-tingling win when they beat Lankan CC by four runs in the SLC Major Limited-Over inter-club cricket tournament continued yesterday. On the opening day on Wednesday Chilaw Marians scraped through to win by one run against Galle CC.

Lankan CC’s under 23 skipper Damitha Silva’s maiden One-Day century proved in vain as his side lost a nerve-wracking contest to Chilaw Marians CC. Chasing a target of 272 Lankan CC’s hopes were kept alive as long as Silva was at the wicket. But with his dismissal for 118 off 135 balls (5 sixes, 6 fours) at 240, Lankan CC lost their remaining five wickets for 27 runs to lose with three balls to spare.

Veteran cricketer Chanaka Wijesinghe brought on his 18-year first-class experience to steer Kandy Customs CC to a five-wicket win over Air Force SC. Chasing a target of 162 Kandy Customs slumped to 110-5, but Wijesinghe stuck it out firmly scoring an unbeaten 76 off 78 balls (1 six, 6 fours) to see his team home with 18 overs to spare.

In a low scoring game at BRC grounds, Sri Lanka One-Day all-rounder Army SC skipper Thisara Perera contributed 58 off 64 balls in their 81-run win over BRC.

Ex-Sri Lanka One-Day cricketer Sandun Weerakkody hit a sparkling 121 off 115 balls (18 fours, 1 six) as Badureliya CC inflicted on CCC their second successive defeat. Weerakkody’s knock outshone Ron Chandraguptha’s knock of 96 off 115 balls for CCC as the result was decided on the Duckworth/Lewis rain rule.

Sri Lanka under 19 World Cup cricketer Kamil Mishara’s maiden One-Day century (102* off 130 balls, 3 sixes, 4 fours) saw NCC score a thumping 159-run win over Kalutara TC. But more than the win it was the venue Arons CC grounds in Kalutara (owned by former cricketer Indunil Anthony) where the match took place that caught the attention, where one side of the boundary was only 45 metres and the ground staff had to cut the shrubs in the morning to make it 52 metres thereby losing two overs of the match and also cutting down on the lunch break. NCC has reported the state of the ground to SLC.

Former Sri Lanka ODI left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Bandara took 4 for 34 to give Saracens SC a comfortable 68 runs win over Police SC, while at the Welagedera Stadium, Kurunegala Youth CC pulled off a creditable five-wicket win over fancied Colts and at Welisara, Ragama CC were made to sweat before beating Navy SC by two wickets. Tamil Union, Panadura SC, Nugegoda S&WC and SSC all won their matches on the Duckworth and Lewis rain rule.
