  • DS shock Trinity

D.S. Senanayake College shocked Trinity College to register their first win over the Kandy School 14/10 at Havelock Park last weekend.

At the short breather DS led 14/0.

DS scored their two tries early in the first half with their skipper Umagilage playing a very good territory game for the Colombo school. Meanwhile Trinity line outs were shocking hardly winning any.

In the latter half they played better brand of three-quarter rugby looking threatening to score at every move. This game will be very vital in deciding the two teams to move to super round.

Referee was Gihan Yatawara.

  • Royal earns bonus point in win against Vidyartha

Royal College continued their winning form and accounted for their second bonus point in the Dialog Schools Under 20 Rugby League encounter when they beat Vidyartha College by 25 points (5 tries) to 10 points (2 tries) at  a fully packed Nittawela Rugby Stadium yesterday.

At the short breather Royal led 10/0.

Royal forwards were simply magnificent with their rolling maul scoring their tries through their heavy sets of forwards. With the muddy conditions too helping them, the big boys from Reid Avenue scored 5 tries against 2 tries by the home team.

Their hooker, Naqeeb Mohamed, second rower, Buwanka Senanayake and their number 8, Ayash Shiyam were simply a treat to watch.

Meanwhile Vidyartha opted to run wide with their three quarter line was checked most of the time and ran out of space in the end with some very good cover defence coming from Royal three quarter line. Skipper Gayan Perera and Deshan Balasooriya played well. Meanwhile their fly half, Rusith Chamodya failed to find touch most of the occasions. This did not allow the home team to gain territory and play in the opposition half.

Rusith Chamodya missed an early penalty in the 3rd minute of the game. Royal using their heavy set of forwards scored their first try through Naqeeb Mohamed in the seventh minute of the game. After some even exchanges Royal scored their second try in the 32nd minute through their number 8, Ayash Shiyam.

After the turn around Royal scored their tries through Thineth Gamage, Yoshitha Jayasekera and Ayash Shiyam while for Vidyartha Kenula Wijethunge and Skipper Gayan Perera touched down once each.

In the Under 16 game Royal edged out Vidyartha 17/12.

Referee was Aruna Shantha.
