Sri Lanka’s left-arm white ball seamer Dilshan Madushanka fetched a record price in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) when reigning champions Jaffna Kings brought him for $ 92,000 at the inaugural auction held at the Shangri La Hotel in Colombo yesterday.
Madushanka (22) who has represented Sri Lanka in 11 T20Is and 2 ODIs, has been in outstanding form for Sri Lanka ‘A’ in the ongoing series against South Africa ‘A’ in Pallekele which may have swayed the bidders to make a record claim for him. Madushanka was the highest wicket-taker in the three-match unofficial ODI series with nine wickets (avg. 12.33), and took an additional four wickets in the first 4-day unofficial test which Sri Lanka ‘A’ won by 160 runs yesterday.
Jaffna Kings also brought the second highest player at the auction, Sri Lanka’s top order white ball batsman Charith Asalanka for $ 80,000.
Dambulla Aura made the third highest bid for a Sri Lankan player with $ 76,000 each for Dhananjaya de Silva and Binura Fernando. B-Love Kandy were not far, spending $ 72,000 for Dinesh Chandimal and $ 70,000 for Sri Lanka’s prime white ball bowler Dushmantha Chameera.
Sadeera Samarawickrama (Dambulla Aura) for $ 68,000, Kamindu Mendis (B-Love Kandy) for $ 60,000 and Dunith Wellalage (Jaffna Kings) for $ 56,000 were the other Sri Lankan players to fetch high prices.
The highest overseas players brought was New Zealand’s Chad Bowes for $ 58,000 by Galle Titans, while Chris Lynn (Jaffna Kings), Ifthikar Ahmed (Colombo Strikers), Noor Ahmed (Dambulla Aura) and Shoaib Malik (Jaffna Kings) were all brought for $ 50,000 each.
Tournament director Samantha Dodanwela thanked Charu Sharma for conducting the auction in a very professional manner.
