Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee has referred the incident concerning national cricketer Kusal Mendis to its Disciplinary Committee.
“The ExCo wanted us to refer the incident to the Disciplinary Committee who will conduct an inquiry. They will have a chat with Kusal and will advise the ExCo what should be done next,” said Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva.
The Disciplinary Committee consists of Chairman L.D.A. Weerasinghe, N. Perera, J.A.T. Jayasinghe, H.H.A. Chandrasiri and R.Y. Weerathunga.
Mendis was involved in a fatal road accident on 5 July when the vehicle he was driving hit and killed a 64-year-old cyclist in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
He was arrested and later released on bail and is due to appear in court again on 9 September.
It is understood that Mendis was returning home from a wedding when the accident took place, and he was not on official duty with Sri Lanka Cricket at the time as the residential camp held at Pallekele of which he was part of had ended on Wednesday – four days before the incident took place.
Mendis is expected to lead defending Premier league champions CCC in the upcoming Premier Super Eight matches commencing on 10 August.
