The Indian juggernaut rolled on as they recorded their sixth win in as many matches to go top of the table and virtually ensure their place in the Cricket World Cup semi-finals.
Yesterday at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, India ended England’s defence of the World Cup title with a convincing 100-run win despite posting only a moderate total of 229.
It was England’s fifth defeat out of six matches and left them at the bottom of the table.
For England, it was another forgettable performance with the bat as they were dismissed for 129. They continue to remain at the bottom of the table and are virtually out of the semi-final race.
A stirring spell of fast bowling from Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah up front blew England away. After the pair struck early, the likes of Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja stepped up too, to ensure England’s chase was derailed well in advance with six batsmen getting bowled.
Indian captain Rohit Sharma laid the foundation stone for their score on a tricky, unpredictable Lucknow surface where odd balls nipped in and the bounce was inconsistent. Put in to bat, for the first time in this tournament, India was in trouble very early losing Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli for an eight-ball duck, and Shreyas Iyer with only 40 runs on the board. Lokesh Rahul joined Sharma in the middle and staged a partial recovery with a stand of 91. Although the conditions were tough, Sharma got to his half-century off 66 balls and went on to make a top score of 87 off 101 balls (10 fours, 3 sixes).
Suryakumar Yadav with a solid 47-ball 49 helped India get past the 200-run mark, which eventually proved a more than enough total.
Scores: India 229-9 (50) (Rohit Sharma 87, Lokesh Rahul 39, Suryakumar Yadav 49, David Willey 3/45, Chris Woakes 2/33, Adil Rashid 2/35)
England 129 (34.5) (Liam Livingstone 27, Jasprit Bumrah 3/32, Mohammad Shami 4/22, Kuldeep Yadav 2/24)
