Colombo Hockey and Football Club (CH & FC) ground is to be converted to Day-Night venue with the installation of floodlights to accommodate several disciplines which are in the spotlight by the end of this year.
Well known as Gymkhana Club with a history of over 100 years, the venue will be finally transformed and be utilised for many sporting events with the installation of floodlights, especially Cricket and Rugby.
This was confirmed by incumbent President Shammi Silva during a ceremony held at the clubhouse last Monday to felicitate yesteryear players who donned the Club Jersey from 1964 to 2000.
“We know at present our Rugby team is not performing great. There are various reasons behind that, and one of them is playing home matches at an outside venue. We must bring back our matches to our grounds, which will be an added advantage.”
“Furthermore, I have a plan to install floodlights which will enable us to play night games instead of day matches which will attract more spectators who will be able to witness matches after their office work. We can also utilise this facility for others sports too,” disclosed Shammi Silva.
“Today Rugby needs lots money, and acquiring sponsors is a herculean task. But I can assure with our strategic plan within another three to four years, CH will produce some champion sides without playing second fiddle to none,” he further added.
He was of the view that the domestic sporting calendars of several sports are clashing. Unlike in the past where a player could engage himself in many sporting disciplines in one season without any hassle, at present the scenario has changed as most of the sports calendars are clashing, which he feels is one of the reasons for the downfall of Rugby.
“Sports Associations should rally round and draw up a plan where their respective events calendar doesn't clash with other sports. This will create a healthy environment to boost all sports and players too can concentrate well in their specialised sporting disciplines,” concluded Shammi Silva.
