The first Sri Lankan and Trinitian to get into a top position was Dilip Kumar, who was involved with the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) some time back.
Ajit, who ended up as Chairman of Northlands Rugby, fully deserves his election into the New Zealand Rugby board as he was picked ahead of a Kiwi from Wellington. He was a member in Northlands for well over a decade. He was in decision making positions from 2014 to 2020. Ajit also served as an Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Blues Super Rugby Club. Ajit spent his last few years in the up-country school during 1970-80 where he was a classmate of former Trinity ace place kicker Ravi Ponnambalam.
Ajit speaking to Daily FT from New Zealand said: “I am eager to work with Provincial Unions to strengthen community rugby right across New Zealand. I am looking forward to the opportunities and the challenges that I may face in the next three years. I would like to thank all those who supported me to take up this position in NZ Rugby Board.”
