In a world where perseverance and dedication are often overshadowed by instant gratification, the story of Deethri shines as a beacon of hope and inspiration. Age 33, former Visakhian, Deethri’s journey has defined all odds where she transforms from a complete novice cyclist to an Ironman World Championship qualifier exemplifying the power of determination, perseverance and resilience.
It was in 2019 when Deethri, with no prior experience in cycling decided to challenge herself by taking up the sport (triathlon), despite the daunting prospect of mastering a skill she had never attempted before.
Fast forward to 2024, Deethri’s journey has transcended far beyond her wildest dreams. Recently selected to represent Sri Lanka at the Ironman 70.3 World Championships in New Zealand 2024, she stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and grit. Ironman 70.3 is a renowned triathlon series that tests the endurance and athleticism of participants worldwide. The “70.3” refers to the total distance covered in miles, comprising a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride, and a 13.1-mile run. This gruelling race format challenges athletes both physically and mentally, pushing them to their limits across three distinct disciplines.
The road to the World Championships was not without its challenges for Deethri. Competing in Abu Dhabi World triathlon Series 2023 and T100 world tour in Singapore 2024 and placing 3rd with over 1,000+ athletes was not without hardship. However, her sheer determination and unwavering focus propelled her to a stellar performance at the Ironman 70.3 Vietnam (5:07:29 hours), where she not only earned a podium finish but also secured her ticket to the prestigious Ironman 70.3 World Championships in New Zealand this December.Behind every successful athlete lies a dedicated support system, and Deethri is no exception. Mentored by Mithun Liyanage (Head Coach), Kanitha Munasinghe (Swim Coach), Bilal Hassen (Strength & Conditioning), Lara Fox (Training Partner and Nutritionist), and Theruni and Nilan from the ‘The Physio’.
Endurance Lab co-founder and head coach a seasoned triathlete and an Ironman World Champion qualifier in 2018 Mithun, along with the rest of the coaches, including Kanitha, a national record holder in swimming, play a crucial role in Deethri’s journey. Their guidance has been instrumental in providing her with the encouragement and motivation needed to overcome obstacles and achieve all her goals.
Amidst her achievement, she’s also a former SL National Synchronised Swimmer and a National Water Polo Player. Last but not least, despite the demands of training and competition, Deethri juggles her athletic pursuits with a full-time job at MAS. This commitment to excel both on and off the field reflects Deethri’s dedication and determination to succeed in all aspects of her life.
