Galle wins Under-19 Girls Sri Lanka Youth League

Champion team Galle celebrate their victory 


Galle crowned themselves Under-19 Girls Sri Lanka Youth League T20 champions when they defeated Kandy comprehensively by ten wickets in the final played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Cricket Stadium yesterday.

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss Kandy were restricted to a total of 87-9 by some tidy bowling from 17-year-old off-spinner Hiruni Hansika (4/12) and 14-year-old left-arm spinner Chamodi Munasinghe (3/16).

Galle were ruthless in their run chase racing to the target of 88 off 72 balls without losing a wicket. Openers Hiruni Hansika thumped an unbeaten 41 off 37 balls (6 fours) and Sanjana Kavindi 27* off 35 balls (2 fours).  

Rashmika Sewwandi, the Galle skipper received the champion’s trophy and a cheque for Rs. 300,000 from Women’s cricket consultant and member of SLC women’s cricket Rasanjalee de Silva, who presented the awards at the end of the final. Runner-up Kandy collected a cheque for Rs. 200,000. Other individual awards were: Player of the Final (Rs. 50,000) – Hiruni Hansika (Galle), Player of the Tournament (Rs. 75,000) – Dahami Sanethma (Colombo), Best Batter of the Tournament (Rs. 50,000) – Sanjana Kavindi (Galle) and Best Bowler of the Tournament (Rs. 50,000) – Shehara Iduwari (Galle).
