Speaking to Daily FT, the Frenchman said: “I came to Sri Lanka nearly 42 years back, and Sri Lanka is my second home. I loved the way rugby is played here, and the support for the game is great. Rtd. Brig. Japuna Jayawardena, late General Denzil Kobbekaduwa were a few of those I could remember when I came and got involved with the Soldiers outfit in 1978, who supported me with some other officers. I was with the Army from 1978 to 1980, and the Soldiers won the knock out in 1979. We beat Havies and Police on our way to the finals.
“We initiated a trophy game between the Army and Havies, which is played for the Michael Packerson Trophy. In 2008, I met a legend in Sri Lanka rugby, none other than Hisham Abdeen. He was a great player and led the Sri Lankan outfit to win the Hong Kong Sevens Bowl in the mid-80s. I got involved with the HARFA (Hisham Abdeen Rugby Football Association), which I feel is one of the great rugby academies for the youngsters. These youngsters will be needed to look after well by the school, and later to represent the Club and the country. Hisham and his wife Jenny were great to these youngsters, looking after them really well. More than 1000 lads attend practices regularly. I am very proud to be part of this annual tournament, and the wellbeing of the academy. I want to continue with Hisham and his good work, and help the academy to reach greater heights. Back at home in France, I took my home team from Division 4 and now they play in Division 1.”
