Green Shirts continue unbeaten run

Trinity College versus Kingswood College

Isipathana College continued their unbeaten run in the league when they beat Dharmaraja College 26/12 at Havelock Park.

At the short breather Green Shirts led 12/7.

Isipathana scored four tries while the Rajans replied with two of them. Isipathana remains as the only unbeaten team in the league with their last game against Vidyartha to be played in the Central Hills next weekend. The Havelock Town lads are guaranteed a place in the next round.

Vidyartha continue winning form

Meanwhile Vidyartha College continued their winning streak when they scored their third win in tandem this time edging out Science College in their own backyard at Mount Lavinia 13/9.

At the short breather winners led 5/3.

The Dark Horse of the tournament, Vidyartha will have a chance of reaching the top two in the league first round. As at now they are on equal terms with Wesley on 15 points apiece with one game left.

Peter’s hold Wesley for a draw

St. Peter’s College who are going through a lean patch put up a brave performance in the later half to square the game against Wesley College at 17 apiece.

At the short breather Wesley led 14/7.

In the end Peterites scored three tries converting one of them while the visitors scored two converted tries and a penalty. Some questionable refereeing decisions were observed in this game.

Trinity cut loose to score half a century plus win

Trinity College ended round 1 with a magnificent 53/6 win over Kingswood College in their Schools League encounter which concluded at their Pallekele Rugby Stadium last weekend.

At the short breather Trinity led 19/6.

The ‘Lions’ performance was even more significant as five of their senior players were injured and those opportunities were given to the youngsters. One of them caught the eyes of the spectator’s was the 16-year-old, Upekh Gammudali who showed no nervousness in playing top division rugby when he ran down three tries and looked lightning fast on attack plus his defence was rock solid. He was also part of the Under 14 All Island Champion side of Trinity in 2019.

For the Lions, Jayageeth Basnayake, Upekh Gammudali, Zeshan Zakir and Sheveen Premaratne looked outstanding. Meanwhile the Randles Hills outfit going through one of their rare lean patches in schools league rugby considered their third half a century plus score. They were beaten by Royal 53/0 and Antonians 57/7 in their earlier games.

Trinity scored their tries through Upekha Gammudali (3), Ashen Wijesuriya (2), Shamendra Dissanayake, Abdul Kaleel, Shaveen Premaratne and Kaveesha Edema scored their tries while Anuhas Kodituwakku converted 4 of them.

Trinity Juniors (Under 16) showed a lot of promise when they continued their unbeaten run this season when they beat Kingswood 14/5. The team is led by Murad Ramzeen and coached by Priyantha Gunaratne.

Thomians host Antonians today

Thomians will host the Antonians today at Havelock Park, the game played for Father Angelo Rosati Memorial Shield. This trophy was introduced in 2004 as a mark of respect for the 150th year at Antonians. Father Rosati was an Italian priest who was the Principal of the Antonians in 1950’s He was instrumental in introducing the game of rugby football to the Katugastota outfit.
