Hasaranga resigns from Sri Lanka T20 captaincy

All-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has resigned as captain of Sri Lanka’s T20I cricket team.

In a letter to Sri Lanka Cricket Hasaranga said it is in the best interest of Sri Lanka cricket that he decided to relinquish the captaincy duties and remain in the side as a player.

“Sri Lanka will always have my utmost best efforts as a player, and I will support and stand by my team and leadership as always,” said Hasaranga in his resignation letter.

Sri Lanka Cricket, while accepting his resignation, stated that Hasaranga will remain an important player in their international cricketing plans.

Hasaranga had a short stint as T20I captain leading his country in 10 matches with 6 wins and 4 losses.

As captain, Hasaranga scored 137 runs (avg. 19.57) with one fifty and a strike rate of 177.92, and 533 runs (avg. 14.02) from 58 matches with one fifty and strike rate of 123.95 when he was not captain.

In bowling, as captain Hasaranga captured 19 wickets (avg. 13.68) with an economy rate of 6.61, and as a player, took 91 wickets (avg. 15.80) from 58 matches at an economy rate of 6.89.
