Sudesh Jayawickrema wins a high ball for Havies against Army SC
By Shamseer Jaleel
The Havelock Sports Club booked their place in the semi-finals of the Clifford Cup Knockout Championship 2025 with a dominant 40/18 victory over Army Sports Club in the fourth quarter-final played at Havelock Park on Saturday.
The hosts put on a commanding performance, scoring six tries to overpower their opponents, who could reply only with two tries in the end.
At the short breather, the Park Club led 26/11.
From the outset, Havelock SC showed their attacking prowess, capitalising on the Soldiers’ defensive lapses. Their forwards laid a strong foundation, while the backs executed swift moves to breach the Army defence. Army SC, despite showing resilience in patches, struggled to match the pace and precision of the Havies’ attack. By halftime, the home side had already established a comfortable lead, putting themselves in a strong position.
Army SC attempted a comeback in the second half, managing to score two tries and convert one while adding two penalties. However, their efforts were not enough to close the gap as Havelock SC remained relentless in both attack and defence. The Havies’ ability to capitalise on scoring opportunities, coupled with accurate conversions, ensured they remained in control until the final whistle.
Havelock SC scored their tries through Janindu Wijeratne (2), Jayathu Rajarathne (2), Chethana Rajarathne, and Shehan Silva. Sandesh Jayawickrema converted five tries, while for Army, their tries were scored by Kaveen Perera And Ashan Bandara. Isuru Madagedara converted one and put over two penalties as well.
Referee Kelum Sandaruwan handled the game.
With this victory, Havelock SC advance to the semi-finals, where they will face CR & FC on 2 April at Havelock Park. The clash promises to be an exciting contest, as both teams will be eager to book a spot in the Clifford Cup final. Havelock SC, who finished second in the League behind Kandy SC, will look to carry their momentum into the crucial encounter.
Defending champions Kandy SC will take on CH & FC in the first semi-final tomorrow (1 April) at Nittawela. Kandy, who dominated the League, will be keen to continue their winning form as they aim for a rugby double this season.
