Havies, Police to battle out for late Gamini Fernando Trophy

Title contenders for the Nippon Paint Rugby League 2022, Havelock Sports Club, and Police Sports Club will play for the late Gamini Fernando Trophy.  

Gamini, the former Trinitian who did well in rugby and cricket for his school (1958-59) played for the Havelock SC (1961-67) and led the Park club in his final year. He retired prematurely two years later in 1969. 

A former national player, a leading referee, and a fine administrator, he was a national coach, national selector, President of the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees, and President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union. 

Gamini for his great love for rugby was dedicated to uplifting the standards not only of his own club but to whoever requested his leadership. He also coached the Police outfit from 1980-to 82. The date of the encounter will be notified in the near future. (SJ)
