Havelock Sports Club continued their winning streak to second week in tandem when they outclassed Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club by 22 points (3 tries, 2 conversions, 1 penalty) to 10 points (1 try, 1 conversion, 1 penalty) win their Nippon Pain Inter Club Rugby league 2022/2023 encounter which was worked off at Welisara last evening.
At the short breather the Park Club led 15/0.
Havies showed a clear edge in this game, both in the three quarter move as well as in the forward’s play. Most of the time the Sailors ran out of plans to stop the powerful breaks made by the Havies lads. Later in the second half, the home team settled and played a better brand of rugby but the lead conceded by them in the initial half was far too much for a catch up game.
Havies drew first blood in the fourth minute of the game through Dinupa Seneviratne’s try. Sandesh Jayawickrema was on target with a 30-meter penalty to take the lead further to eight to nothing. A few minutes later, former Thomian player, Christian de Lile try and Sandesh Jayawickrema conversion took the park club to take the short breather at 15 to nothing.
After the turn around Navy SC reduced the gap through Thilina Weerasinghe penalty. Though Thilina missed another kickable penalty, Sailors came back into the game through Mushin Faleel’s try. Thilina added the extras to reduce the gap 10/15. But Havies had other plans as magician Mithun Hapugoda danced his way through in the last couple of minutes of the game with a fantastic try. Sandesh Jayawickrema who had a grand game added the extras to take a clear 22/10.
