Havies into Clifford Cup semi-final after sinking Sailors

Havelock Sports Club stormed into the semi-final encounter when they handed off Navy Sports Club by 55 points (9 tries, 5 conversions) to 5 points (1 try) in their second quarter final encounter of the Clifford Cup Knockout 2024 rugby encounter, which was worked off at Havelock Park last evening.

At the short breather the Park Club led 29/5.

Havies simply ran circles around the inexperienced Sailors in a one-sided affair, and the Navy outfit conceded their 11th defeat this season last evening at the Park ending one of their worst seasons.

Havies on their part, played their hearts out, aiming at the Clifford Cup knockout trophy this season, which is two steps away. Their skipper, Azmir Fajudeen led from the front with an amazing game for the Park Club. He was well supported by Dinupa Seneviratne, Sandesh Jayawickrema, Jayathu Rajarathne and Raveen Fernando. Havies scored 9 tries while the visitors could reply with only 1 try.

Havies drew first blood in the 9th minute of the game through a powerful move by Oliver Buckle. A few minutes later Havies nippy scrum half, Rifan Mohamed touched down. Dinupa Seneviratne, try and Sandesh Jayawickrema took Havies into a handy lead of 17/0. Sailors hit back through their skipper Stephan Gregory try. One try each from Senal Silva and Jayathu Rajarathne took the Park club into the short breather 29/5.

After the turn around Havies added tries through Azmir Fajudeen, Raveen Fernando, Udara Lakshan and Sooriya Dodangoda. Conversions were taken by Samuel Maduwantha, Janith Chandimal and Sandesh Jayawickrema.

Referee was Raveen Alexander.

Havies will meet the winner of the CH and FC vs Army encounter which will take place today at Longdon Place.
