In a landmark moment for Sri Lankan martial arts, Nimesha Kumari, a non-boxing female fighter, has secured a remarkable sponsorship from the Asian Security Group.

This pivotal sponsorship is set to elevate her career to an international level, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lankan sports history.

Nimesha Kumari, an undefeated martial artist in Sri Lanka, is the recipient of this extensive sponsorship. The Asian Security Group, a leading organisation dedicated to nurturing local talent, provides the sponsorship. The sponsorship encompasses all aspects of Kumari’s journey as a professional fighter, including a professional stipend, nutrition, training, trainer’s fee, and medical coverage. Remarkably, this is the first time a combat sports woman from a discipline other than boxing has received such comprehensive support, positioning Kumari as a brand ambassador for the sport.

The announcement was made at Headquarters by W15, with the sponsorship spanning 10 years. This period allows Kumari ample time to focus on her growth and development as a professional athlete.

The sponsorship aims to empower Kumari to compete on an international level, underscoring her talent and dedication. It also marks a significant step in the Karma Fight League’s (KFL) mission to financially and professionally support local martial artists, raising them to global standards.

KFL Co-Founder and Creative Producer Ilham Hossen said: “In comparison to international fighters, our athletes typically receive fewer fight opportunities each year. Through this sponsorship, we aim to increase the number of fights for our fighters, allowing them to gain valuable experience and build their professional records.”

KFL, a pioneering organisation in Sri Lanka’s martial arts scene, aims to provide a platform for professional fighters and elevate them to international standards. The league has successfully hosted major fight nights, with prize pools exceeding Rs. 1 million.

KFL Combat Sports Director Dayan Samarasekara said: “Our heritage in martial arts is rich and profound. Through KFL, we are offering our athletes the opportunity to showcase their skills and dedication on a global stage. Nimesha epitomises the spirit of resilience and excellence. We are committed to providing state-of-the-art facilities and comprehensive safety measures to ensure our ‘kumari’, Nimesha, can train and compete at the highest levels while maintaining her well-being.” KFL PR and Communication Director Shyam Impett said: “This sponsorship is more than financial support; it represents our commitment to empowering local fighters and elevating them to international competitors. It is a thrilling time for KFL and the entire martial arts community in Sri Lanka.”

KFL has consistently worked towards its goal of financially strengthening local martial artists, bringing fighters from various traditions like Kung Fu, Karate, Muay Thai, and boxing together in a unique and exhilarating format inspired by the K-1 tradition from Japan.

Asian Security Group Chairman Dimantha Jayawardena emphasised the five-year partnership with KFL and the importance of investing in and nurturing local talent to elevate the country’s presence in global sports arenas. This partnership is part of a broader effort to boost Sri Lanka’s international sports profile, which has seen significant growth. For instance, Sri Lanka has seen a 20% increase in international sports participation over the past decade, highlighting the growing potential of its athletes.

Kumari’s coach, Jamitha Gayan, underscored the impressive achievements of Pallebowala National School, which, despite its rural setting, has produced seven international representatives in just three years. He pointed out that this sponsorship marks a crucial turning point for Kumari as, even after schooling, it still ensures she will continue to receive the guidance and resources needed to excel in her sport, serving as an inspiration for other aspiring athletes from similar backgrounds.

Kumari expressed her gratitude, saying: “I am immensely grateful for this opportunity. This sponsorship enables me to concentrate entirely on my training and strive towards my dream of competing internationally and bringing victories home to Sri Lanka.”

She further added: “This sponsorship is a monumental step for female fighters in Sri Lanka. It breaks barriers and sets a precedent for future sponsorships and support in the martial arts community. This support is not just for me, but for all aspiring female athletes in Sri Lanka.”
