Sri Lanka to make all effort to gain promotion to AR top 4 in 2025
Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) reduced their player pool to 39 members after their first practice game, which took place late last week. The pool will be reduced to a further 9 players after the final practice game today (22 April) at CR and FC ground.
The Asia Rugby Division 1 is expected to kick off at the Racecourse grounds on 30 April with Hosts Sri Lanka, Kazakhstan, India and Qatar locking horns.
The final 30 players will be sent to Sports Minister for approval. In the event of any injuries these players in the squad of 30 would be replaced.
According to reliable source the leadership is expected to be announced sooner with the race between the former Peterite, Kandy SC and present CR and FC skipper, Soyuru Anthony and former Trinity Rugby Lion, CR and FC and current Kandy SC player, Tarinda Ratwatte. The national outfit is under Head Coach Sanath Martis with Nilfer Ibrahim and Dushantha Lewke assisting him.
Sri Lanka will play India on the opening day in game 2 while the winners of day will play in the final on day 2 which is on 4 May. The winners of this tournament will be promoted to AR Top 4 in 2025 while losers will be demoted to Division 2 in the same year. Currently Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia and UAE are playing in top 4 where each team will play total of 6 matches with 3 games at home and the equal numbers overseas as well. Sri Lanka hosting this event after couple of decades will make all efforts to end in the Top 4 in the Xv a side AR tournament where the country rugby went in to dormant status given priority for the shorter version of the game for some time.
