Sri Lanka’s leading industrial glove manufacturer ATG Group recently successfully concluded its inaugural Howard Goth Memorial Shield cricket tournament in honour of one of its founders Howard Goth.
The competition was part of ATG’s Annual Sports Day, which saw the participation of over 1,000 of the group’s employees and took place over a period of three months leading up to its grand finale.
The ATG Sports Day comprises the competition for the Howard Goth Shield as well as a volleyball tournament and a netball tournament. This year’s event drew an impressive 128 teams for the three sports competitions. The BOI grounds in Katunayake served as the event’s venue.
At the presentation ceremony, Managing Director Fazal Abeen recollected the late founder and his passion for sports. He also emphasised how sports served to bring everybody together and help in building a sense of fellowship and camaraderie amongst employees which transcended ethnic, racial and other boundaries.
‘Young Brothers’ of ATG Handcare ‘B’ emerged champions this year, beating ‘Store Sport’ of ATG Occupational ‘B’ in the finals.
The captain of the winning team K.G. Kavinda thanked the organisation for keeping the founder’s legacy alive by holding this tournament in a spirit of camaraderie, allowing workers to explore their hidden talents in cricket which would have otherwise gone undiscovered.
