The inaugural South Asia Lawyers’ Cricket Cup kicked off in Colombo on Thursday and will go on till 5 April.
The tournament is being organised by the Cricket Association of Advocates in CAAI in conjunction with Sri Lanka Lawyers’ Cricket.
This novel initiative involving zonal representative teams from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has been introduced with a view to create greater cricketing competition amongst lawyers on a global scale. AVR group in Bangalore, India is the principal sponsor of the event.
This initial edition of South Asia Lawyers’ Cricket Cup will feature teams from Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata from India, Lahore and Karachi from Pakistan, Dhaka from Bangladesh and Colombo from Sri Lanka.
The tournament will kick off in grand style with the opening ceremony being scheduled for 30 March at the Colombo Cricket Club grounds. The dignitaries who are expected to grace the occasion include Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Supreme Court Judges Buwaneka Aluwihare and Yasantha Kodagoda, Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry, Tourism Minister Harin Fernando, Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam, Bar Association of Sri Lanka President Kaushalya Nawaratne, Sri Lanka Cricket President Shammi Silva and former Sri Lanka Cricket Team Captains Arjuna Ranatunga and Aravinda de Silva.
The first round of the tournament was kicked off yesterday to will go on till 2 April on a round robin basis and the semi-finals on 4 April. All these matches will be played at Colts, BRC and Thurstan College grounds. The final will take place on 5 April at the Colombo Cricket Club grounds. All of the matches will be streamed live on the YouTube Channel of Sri Lanka Lawyers’ Cricket. This is the second major international lawyers’ cricket tournament hosted by Sri Lanka lawyers.
