Indian High Commissioner T.S. Sandhu presents trophies to winners Radesh Daluwatta and Irene Scarth
The ‘India Cup’ Golf tournament, organised annually since 2006 by the Indo-Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ILCCI) in association with the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, was held on 24 January. The ultimate award was a grand trophy – the ‘India Cup’ depicting the lion head symbolising strength.
The tournament was held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club and was viewed mainly as a social event rather than a competitive one. It was a resounding success with over 100 players – both male and female – taking part. The atmosphere was extraordinary! The players prepared to tee-off in their respective teams, exactly as planned at 10 a.m.
From the 30 teams of four, the overall Gents’ winner was Radesh Daluwatta, first runner-up was Upul De Silva and the second runner-up was Sanjiv Vairavanathan. In the Ladies category, the overall winner was Irene Scarth, first runner-up was Suwaneetha Selvaratnam and the second runner-up was Niranjali Amarasooriya.
Other awards presented were ‘Closest to the Pin Hole No. 9’ which went to Andy Anderson and ‘Closest to the Pin Hole No. 13’ which went to Amal Cabraal. Longest Drive Gent’s winner Hole No. 8 winner was Somanath Fernando and the Ladies winner was Ruvani Desinghe. In the 9 Hidden Holes – No. 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 – Tyab Akbarally emerged as the winner.
An enjoyable day of events ended with an award ceremony and gala dinner at the India House hosted by T.S. Sandhu. The award ceremony which took place in the beautifully maintained garden of the India House, started with a welcome speech given by ILCCI President Romesh David.
As the guests were greeted and welcomed to the India House their business cards were collected for the raffle draw, which was held after the award ceremony.
