Reuters: Indian cricket team’s debutant Washington Sundar on Tuesday (12 December) said the opportunity to play for his country in the second one-day international (ODI) against Sri Lanka was a dream come true.
The 18-year-old all rounder, who had already received his maiden international call-up after being named in the T20 squad for the three-match series against Sri Lanka last week, was called to the ODI squad to replace Kedar Jadhav, who suffered a hamstring injury.
Sundar, while addressing a news conference in Mohali city of India’s northern Punjab state, said he will look to contribute to the team in whatever position he is needed.
Sri Lanka steamrolled India by seven wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series in northern hill town of Dharamsala on Sunday (December 10) after Lankan pace bowler Suranga Lakmal claimed four wickets for 13 runs in his impeccable 10 overs, to bundle out the hosts for 112 in 38.2 overs at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium.
India were reeling at 29-7 in the 17th over before Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit 10 boundaries and couple of sixes to strike a belligerent 65, to help India first go past the record for lowest ODI total of 35. But despite the former captain contributing more than half of the team total, the Sri Lankans overcame the total without breaking a sweat.
Stand-in Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, will be looking to avenge the defeat by trumping the Lankans in the match at Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday (December 13).
