The India Cup Golf tournament, organised annually since 2006 by the Indo Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ILCCI) in association with the High Commission of India in Sri Lanka, was held on 28 January.

The ultimate award was a grand trophy – the ‘India Cup’ depicting the Lion Head – a symbol of strength.

The tournament was held at the Royal Colombo Golf Club and is viewed mainly as a social event rather than a competitive one. It was a resounding success with over 100 players – both male and female – taking part. The atmosphere was extraordinary. The players prepared to tee off in their respective teams exactly as planned at 8.20 a.m.

From the 25 teams of four, the overall gents’ winner was Somantha Fernando and the runner-up was Eoin O. Mahony. In the ladies’ category, the overall winner was Roshani Sangani and the runner-up was Dinoo De Mel.

The other awards presented were ‘Closest to the Pin Hole No. 9’ which went to Nandalal Weerasinghe and ‘Closest to the Pin Hole No. 16’ which went to Rohith Fonseka. The winner of the ‘Longest Drive Hole No. 8’ was Suhayb Sangani. Sanjay Tiwari emerged the winner of the 5 Hidden Holes – Holes No. 3, 6, 9, 10, 14 and 18.

The enjoyable day of events ended with an award ceremony and gala dinner at India House hosted by Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka T.S. Sandhu. The award ceremony, which took place in the beautifully tended garden of India House, started with a welcome speech given by Vish Govindasamy, the President of the Indo Lanka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, followed by a speech from Sandhu.

As the guests were welcomed to India House, their business cards were collected for the raffle draw, which was held after the award ceremony.

The organisers expressed their gratitude to their member organisations – Brandix Apparel Ltd, Air India, Carson Cumberbatch Plc, Plant Lipids Lanka Ltd, South Asia Gateway Terminal, Citihealth Imports Ltd, Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) Ltd, Tata Communications Lanka Ltd, Piramal Glass Co., Lanka IOC, Tal Lanka Hotels, Pyramid Wilmar Ltd, State Bank of India, E.W.
