Army SC winger Manoj Kumara hands off Navy player
By Shamseer Jaleel
Army Sports Club put up a magnificent second half rally to demolish the last placed Navy Sports Club by 49 points (8 tries, 3 conversions, 1 penalty) to 22 points (3 tries, 2 conversions, 1 penalty) win in their Inter Club Rugby encounter which was worked off at Welisara last evening.
At the short breather scores were deadlocked at 10 a-piece.
After a close first half where both teams scored a try each it was Army who ran circles around the weaker Sailors defence. They danced their way to add 7 more tries where the home team could reply with only 2 more tries. Meanwhile both teams put over a penalty each in the later half. In the later half it was one way traffic with the Army sending a strong warning that they are all out to feature in the Cup segment in the Super round.
Army SC scored their tries through Manoj Kumara (3), Dhanilsha Dissanayake (3), Isuru Medagedera and Ashan Bandara. Isuru converted three of them and also put over a penalty. Meanwhile for the Sailors they scored their tries through Denuwan Wickremarachchi, Thilina Weerasinghe and Ramesh Anushka. Thilina converted two of them and put over a solitary penalty as well.
Army claimed number 4 position from their 7 outings so far while the Sailors are sinking at last position with the same number of points not only ending last but also with a possibility of losing out on the opportunity to participate in the Clifford Cup Knockout encounter as only the top 8 will get selected.
Referee was Aruna Shantha.
Air Force will host the Sri Lions at Ratmalana today in another Inter Club rugby encounter while on 2 February Havies will host CR and FC at Havelock Park and Kandy SC will make their long journey to Colombo to meet Police SC at Police Park.
