  • Nepal becomes an associate member

Iran and Laos have been awarded full member status having met all the relevant criteria, while Nepal and Panama become new associate members of World Rugby (WR).

This was announced after a virtual Interim Council meeting recently. Now the total WR membership has increased to 128 unions. Two Asian Rugby playing countries, Iran and Laos add more power to the region which could get more votes in the future in order to make vital decision in the oval-shaped ball game.

Unprecedented growth has been driven by increases in women’s interest and participation in the oval-shaped ball game which has grown at a rapid pace in the last seven years in the region. These additions will give power for more voting rights for Asia Rugby (AR) at the council meeting which will take place at World Rugby for funding purposes and improve the game in the region.
