Royal player dummies two Kingswood players

Joes’ rugby outfit, one of the top contenders for the Schools League this year regained the Lady Jayathilake Shield after a lapse of two years when they edged out Thomians in a thriller 30/28 at Havelock Park last week-end.

Joes collected their points from four tries, two conversions and two penalties while Thomians scored through three tries, two conversions and three penalties in their tally of 28 points.

Joes drew first blood through Naveen Marasinghe try. Thomians soon replied through ever reliable, Yehan Bulathsinghalage penalty. Star Thomian skipper and No. 8, Chariya kurukulasuriya scored Thomians first try. Bulathsinghalage added the extras to take the lead 10/5 in their favor. 

But Joes went ahead through two dandy tries through Naveen Marasinghe and Jehan Athukorala. Dilhara Subash converted one of them to take the short breather at 17/10 favouring the Darley Road School.

After the turn around Bulathsinghalage scoring and converting the try to equalise the scores at 17 apiece. Dilhara Subash’s two penalties was replied by one Bulathsinghalage penalty. But Naveen Manrasinghe who had a grand outing touched down soon after the Joes with Subash adding the extras to take 30/23 lead.

During the last minute of the game Thomian full back Koch was in lightning speed to touch down the corner flag but unfortunately the difficult angle kick was missed by Yehan Bulathsinhalage. This gave Joes the chance of regaining the Lady Jayathilake Shield after a lapse of two years.

Referee Aaqil Jamaldeen handled the game very well.

Joes remain unbeaten in their two games while Thomians went through two outings against Trinity and Joes and lost both of them but by just are all out to make a comeback in their remainder of the three games against Royal, Kingswood and St. Anthony’s.

Royal outclass Kingswood

Royal College outclassed Kingswood College, probably the weakest side in the group 53 to nothing at the Royal Sports Complex last weekend. Winners collected through eight tries, five conversions and a penalty.

At the short breather Royal led 33/0.

Pasindu Heshan (2), Hasnaka Higgodage (2), Naveen Perera, Shenal Adhikaram, Rahil Wijesekara and Supun Gamlathge scored the Royal tries with Nabeel Yahiya was successful in converting 5 of them and adding a solitary penalty for the Reid Avenue School.

Rajans hold Science in a thrilling 15/15 draw

In the Central Hills Dharamraja held giant killers, Science College to a thrilling 15/15 draw at the Nittawela Rugby Stadium.

At the short breather Science led 8/5.

Both teams scored two tries, one conversion and a penalty.
