Johann Fernando wins Trap Shooting Open Title

Johann Fernando of the Negombo Rifle Club won the open championship held at the Clay Target Shooting Club range in Payagala from 21-24 June.

While Fernando emerged champion, he was followed by Rishan Dias of the Negombo Rifle Club and ASP Wimalaratne of Sri Lanka Police.

There were competitors from the Negombo Rifle Club, Clay Target Shooting Club of Colombo, Magnum Shooting Club, Siyane Rifle Shooting Club, Hill Country Sports Shooting Club, Wayamba Sport Shooting Club, Puttalam District Sport Shooting Club and Sri Lanka Police. 

A notable absence at the competition was Sri Lanka Air Force who usually takes part actively and fiercely. 

However, due to the lack of resources such as ammunition, etc. the disappointed team was compelled to refrain from participation. The Army and Navy are still to come into the sport of Trap and Skeet, which are Olympic disciplines of shooting.

The competition had 68 participants from the above-mentioned shooting associations duly affiliated to the National Shooting Sport Federation of Sri Lanka. The top 18 shooters were selected from the above-mentioned competitors and the final six shooters participated fiercely to grab the championship title. The final six consisted of Jeremy Fernando, Johann Fernando, Qiguing Wang, Rishan Dias, Rathnayaka Wimalarathna and Perry Emmanuel in chronological order. 

The team events went out to the Negombo Rifle Club represent by Johan Fernando, Jeremy Fernando and Johnston Fernando and Sri Lanka Police’s Upul Rathnayaka, R. Wimalaratne and Susil Seneviratne while third place went out to Mohan Gilbert, Menaka Liyanage and Sean Silva of the Negombo Rifle Club.

The next Trap competition, which will be a combined competition conducted by the Magnum and Clay Target Shooting Club of Colombo, is scheduled for August.
