Sri Lankan adventurer Johann Peries is on the cusp of making mountaineering history as he sets out to conquer the prestigious ‘Seven Summits’ challenge — scaling the tallest peak on each continent.
Already celebrated as the first Sri Lankan man to summit Mount Everest, Johann has reached the peaks of four of these iconic mountains. Now, with unwavering resolve and a desire to elevate Sri Lanka’s standing on the global stage, he’s preparing for the final three summits in a daring series of expeditions planned for early 2025.
This bold pursuit is not merely a personal milestone but a testament to Sri Lanka’s ability to achieve greatness. As Johann sets his sights on this extraordinary feat, his mission promises to inspire a new generation with his unparalleled courage and passion for adventure.
A journey of triumphs and challenges
In 2018, Johann became the second Sri Lankan to conquer Everest, cementing his place in the nation’s history. Since then, he has scaled Mount Elbrus in Europe, Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, and Mount Kosciuszko in Australia, demonstrating extraordinary tenacity and skill.
Now, Johann faces his ultimate test: completing the Seven Summits challenge by summiting Mount Vinson in Antarctica, Mount Aconcagua in South America, and Mount Denali in North America. Should he succeed, he will be the first Sri Lankan — and one of only 350 climbers globally — to achieve this monumental feat.
“This journey isn’t just about reaching the world’s highest peaks,” Johann said. “It’s about showcasing the strength and spirit of Sri Lanka. I hope to inspire every Sri Lankan to dream big, face challenges head-on, and believe in the impossible.”
A vision for Sri Lanka
Johann’s mission transcends personal ambition. By planting the Sri Lankan flag atop the highest peaks on every continent, he aims to showcase the resilience and determination of his homeland. His efforts are sparking interest in mountaineering across Sri Lanka, encouraging others to explore this challenging yet rewarding sport.
“This isn’t just my journey,” Johann said. “It’s a symbol of what our nation can achieve. I want to prove that even a small island can leave an indelible mark on the world’s tallest mountains.”
Grit, setbacks, and resilience
Johann’s road to glory has been anything but smooth. His first Everest expedition in 2016 ended just 400 metres shy of the summit due to technical challenges. Undeterred, he returned in 2018 and successfully conquered the peak.
Since then, he has braved perilous conditions on Mount Kilimanjaro, faced the unforgiving terrain of Mount Aconcagua, and battled extreme weather on Mount Denali, where he came agonisingly close to the summit before being forced to turn back.
In February 2025, Johann will attempt Aconcagua again, followed by Denali in May, as he pushes towards his ultimate goal. His resilience is a testament to the indomitable spirit of exploration, proving that setbacks are merely stepping stones to success.
Backing the dream
Johann’s audacious venture has found a critical supporter in a Dutch philanthropist who has provided substantial funding. This generosity underscores the significance of his journey, not only for Johann but for Sri Lanka’s place on the global map of mountaineering excellence.
Inspiring a nation
Mountaineering is not for the faint-hearted. It demands relentless training, immense mental fortitude, and the courage to face life-threatening situations. Johann has faced all of this and more, yet his passion remains unshaken.
“Mountaineering isn’t just about climbing mountains — it’s about overcoming life’s obstacles,” Johann said. “I hope to inspire others to conquer their personal summits, whether they’re made of rock or life’s challenges.”
