  • 2,450 young athletes participated from 473 schools in 116 events 

At the ‘Samaposha Provincial School Games 2019’ for the North-Western Provincial School Games, concluded recently, the overall Boys Championship trophy was won by St. Joseph Vaz College Wennappuwa. The runner-up was St. Mary’s College, Chilaw while third place was awarded to Maliyadeva College Kurunegala.

In the Girls Championship, Central College Kuliyapitiya was the overall winner with Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa and Maliyadeva Girls’ College Kurunegala tied in second-place.

During the Samaposha North-Western Provincial School Games, 2450 young athletes participated from 473 schools in 116 events. The School games was held from 17-20 July at the Sir Albert F. Peris Stadium in Wennappuwa. 

The next series in the ‘Samaposha Provincial School Games 2019’ is the Eastern Provincial School Games and was held from 24-28 July at the Leelarathna Grounds, Kantale.

The North-Western Senior Boys Championship winner was St. Mary’s College, Chilaw while the Senior Girls Championship was won by Central College Kuliyapitiya. The Junior Boys Champion was presented to Maliyadeva College Kurunegala and the Junior Girls Champion was also from Maliyadeva College Kurunegala.

The trophy for the Most Talented Sportsman was presented to D.M. Bogoda from Sir John Kothalawala Maha Vidyalaya, Kurunegala while the Most Talented Sportswoman was awarded to P.P.I.N. Pallegama from Ibbagamuwa Central College.

The North-Western Provincial School Games which concluded successfully is powered by CBL Samaposha, manufacturer of the nation’s popular cereal brand, Samaposha, as part of a series of separate 2019 School Games being held in the Uva, North-Central, Eastern and North Western provinces.

With sole sponsorship from Samaposha and in collaboration with the Provincial Educational offices, the games are being conducted independently throughout the month of July in each of the above mentioned provinces.

North-Western Provincial Department of Education Assistant Director K.M. Rajathilake said: “This is the third instance that such a sports games is being held. We are extremely appreciative of the encouragement provided by Samaposha in assisting these athletes to compete with self-confidence and through it helping them reach international standards and bring honour to the country.”
