Srinarth Sooriyabandara of Kandy SC on attack

By Shamseer Jaleel

Kandy Sports Club made their last Colombo trip a remarkable one when they beat Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club 37/28 at Welisara yesterday.

At the short breather winners led 18/7.

Kandy looked a different outfit from the kick off onwards and continued the good work where they did from last weekend’s Havies outing. They looked settled and their three-quarter line looked lightning fast and threatening with their powerful moves. Their full back, Srinarth Sooriyabandara joined Tharinda Ratwatte, Nigel Ratwatte and Lavanga Perera while on attack. All four played a grand game along with their skipper Damith Dissanayake. Though the score line came very close later in the second half within two points at 30/28 they never panicked. They re-grouped and scored one more try to earn a bonus point win.

Sailors too hit back after about 16 minutes into the first half. They played well on attack while defence looked all over. Musheen Faleel, Thilina Weerasinghe and Nirosh Perera played their hearts out.

Kandy drew first blood through Nigel Ratwatte try and Tharinda Ratwatte added the extra two points. Five minutes later Tharinda took Kandy ahead through a 35-meter penalty, but Navy SC hit back through Nirosh Perera try and Thilina Weerasinghe conversion. A few minutes later Tharinda Ratwatte missed a 30-meter penalty but was on target with another 25-meter penalty on the stroke of half time to take the short breather at 18/7 in their favour.

After the turn around Kandy SC scored through their skipper, Damith Dissanayake, Dinal Ekanayake and Srinarth Sooriyabandara with Tharinda Ratwatte converting two of them while Navy SC scored through their skipper, Adeesha Weerathunge, Stephan Gregory and a penalty try.

Referee was Raveen Alexander.
