Kandy Sports Club and St. Peter’s College stamped their class at the CR and FC Centenary Rugby Sevens 2023 when they got the better of Havelock SC and Royal College respectively at Longdon Place yesterday. Meanwhile the visiting BWRC from Australia did not return home empty handed as they won the Women’s Cup segment.
Kandy SC after overcoming CH and FC 31/7 in the semi-final virtually fielding a national sevens outfit got the better of the Park Club in the final 21/7. Kandy looked a yard faster and their professional approach towards the game took them through. Their skipper, Srinarth Sooriyabandara was omnipresent and had a grand tournament.
Park Club fielding a young outfit won many hearts for their good performance and reach the final despite having no seniors in their outfit.
Meanwhile Royal who got the better of Joes in the semi-final 17/12 in a tight contest while St. Peter’s were yards faster than Trinity to beat them 20/7. Coming in to the final Peterites looked a vastly improved side in the tournament never allowing Royal to settle down while scoring three converted tries.
Meanwhile the BWRC outfit from Australia had a tough early first half but went over the Army SC in the women’s Cup final 15/7 in a tight contest.
CR and FC had to settle for the Plate win when they overcame CH and FC 31/7. Much was expected from Isipathana but they just managed to edge out Zahira 24/19 in a thriller at the schools Plate final. Navy handed off Air Force 52/0 in the Women's Plate final.
Vidyartha (Schools), Doha RFC (Women's) and Army SC won their respective segments of Bowl events.
CR and FC Centenary year sevens was very well organised and played in front of packed Longdon Place on the final day yesterday.
